Job Description:

The City of Ottawa, Kansas is recruiting for a Volunteer Firefighter.   Under the supervision of the Fire Chief or his/her designee, the Volunteer Firefighter protects life and property by combating, extinguishing and preventing fires.  An employee in this class performs specialized firefighting duties under emergency conditions, frequently involving considerable physical danger.  Work is performed under the direct supervision of the supervising officer, but requires thorough individual understanding of firefighting methods.  The employee is also responsible for assisting in maintenance of fire equipment, apparatus and quarters.

Education and Experience: (Combination of education, training, and experience will be considered)

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • This is a volunteer position and prior experience in firefighting is not required but preferred.
  • Volunteer is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six (6) months in the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (not all inclusive)

  • Ability to perform specialized firefighting duties, respond to emergencies, render aid to citizens, and utilize all firefighting equipment with a reasonable degree of skill.
  • Ability to cooperate with others and to accept the lines of authority.
  • Thorough knowledge of the geographies of the City of Ottawa.
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of modern firefighting methods, principles, and practices, hydraulics, fire ground techniques, first aid, and related matters.
  • Ability to operate power tools, hoses and other related equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees, City officials, business entities, and the general public.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work under general supervision and make responsible decisions.
  • Ability to use good judgment and think quickly and rationally in difficult or stressful situations.

Additional Information:

  • Must provide current CPAT certification or pass department physical agility test.
  • Applicant must be 18 years of age at the time of hire, possess a valid Driver's License, and be insurable by the City's insurance carrier.    
  • May be confronted with adverse weather conditions, toxic fumes, bloodborne pathogens, hazardous situations, life threatening situations, and stressful conditions.

Required Hours:  Mandatory 8 hours of Ride Time per month.  Must attend 75% of monthly training meetings.  Will respond to structure fires or other emergencies when available.  

 

Residency:     Employees are required to establish and maintain residency within a driving distance of 35 miles of the Ottawa City Hall within one year from hire.
