The Common Ground community garden and urban agriculture program provides 9.5 acres of public land to aspiring farmers and gardeners in Douglas County, KS. It encompasses 9 community gardens and an incubator farm serving over 225 gardeners and 9 farmers. Job Requirements:The Program Manager will work within the Lawrence-Douglas County Sustainability Office to manage day-to-day program needs, provide program-wide technical assistance and education in conservation agriculture practices, and work with diverse partners to develop a vision and strategy for program growth and enhancement. This is a full-time, non-exempt, granted-funded position with benefits. It is supported through September 2024 by a Conservation Collaboration Grant awarded to Douglas County by the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Salary is $26.57/hr. with excellent benefits. - ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Oversee the existing Common Ground program, including: - - Lease renewals, - - - Program budget and billing - - Website and program communications; - - Supporting a network of volunteer garden managers; - - Program tracking and reporting; and - - Coordination between multiple departments on site needs. - Examine program-wide operations for opportunities; make recommendations for best practice and pursue implementation for program cohesion. - - Provide on-demand agricultural technical assistance to all program sites. - Plan and implement conservation agriculture lessons and workshops at both the garden and incubator farm scale, including design and - - installation of demonstration projects. - Explore opportunities for additional garden sites, including an equitable process for locating new sites. - Maintain and grow community partnerships that strengthen resources for agricultural entrepreneurs and create growth opportunities for aspiring - - farmers. - Support a contractor in the development of curriculum for incoming and existing farmers and pilot of an apprenticeship program. - - Work with stakeholders and current farmers to envision and build training tracks and timelines for incoming aspiring farmers. - - Support the Incubator Farm Coordinator in the management of the existing Incubator Farm site. A Program Manager candidate will have: - A minimum of 5 years combined of experience and/or education closely related to the duties of the position; - - Background in a variety of sustainable agriculture techniques and practices; - Drive to champion an inclusive food system, agricultural entrepreneurship, and land conservation practices; - Excellent interpersonal skills to work with a diverse group of aspiring farmers, resident gardeners, nonprofit partners, and government agencies; - Strong analytical skills, including the ability to identify systemic problems and develop solutions; - Self-motivation and self-direction, with the ability to work well within a rapidly-changing environment; - Demonstrated organizational skills to coordinate logistics among multiple partners; - Skills to formulate and clearly communicate instructions; - A reasonably flexible work schedule, including some evenings and weekends as needed; - Ability to work outside in varying conditions and seasons; - Ability to do moderate physical tasks, such as are involved in garden and farming instruction; - Access to reliable transportation.
