Position: Director of Finance Kansas Operations (supporting two
operating companies of Summit Materials, Inc. NYSE: SUM)
Cornejo & Sons, LLC ("Cornejo") and Hamm, Inc. ("Hamm") are leading
aggregate suppliers and highway construction companies in the
Kansas division of Summit Materials "Summit." With combined
revenues of $300 million and over 1,100 employees, the two
companies operate multiple sites selling aggregates, concrete,
asphalt, construction and paving services, and landfill services
through Kansas. Headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, Cornejo was
founded in 1952. Hamm was established in 1954 and maintains its
headquarters in Perry, KS.
Cornejo and Hamm are part of the East Segment within Summit
Materials, a NYSE-listed leading vertically integrated heavy
building and construction materials company in the aggregates,
cement, concrete, asphalt and asphalt paving businesses. With
approximately $2.0 billion in revenue, Summit operates in 23 U.S.
states and western Canada. Founded in 2008 by CEO Tom Hill, since
2009, Summit has completed more than 70 acquisitions focused around
twelve operating platforms and continues to pursue growth
opportunities in new and existing markets.

Based in Perry, KS, the Director of Finance will be responsible for
the finance functions within Cornejo and Hamm. This is a key role
in the company with an emphasis on being a business partner to the
Kansas Operations President and the Presidents of Cornejo and Hamm.
This includes developing and tracking the performance indicators
which prompt the management teams to take timely action on the key
levers of performance improvement and evaluating opportunities to
grow the Kansas businesses. The Director of Finance is also
responsible for all aspects of accounting, including acquisition
integrations, management reporting, and adherence to U.S. GAAP,
SOX, and other internal controls, as well as upstream reporting and
communications to Summit. Key Relationships
Reports to: East Segment CFO (primary) Kansas Operations President
Other key relationships: Cornejo and Hamm Presidents, Line of
Business VPs, Director of Human Resources & Safety Summit Finance
Group (SFG) in Wichita, KS where financial reporting functions are
processed and reports generated.
- Ensure that effective internal controls are in place and ensure
compliance with U.S. GAAP, SOX and other regulatory laws and rules
for financial reporting.
- Develop and monitor reporting and metrics which enable
management to focus on economic drivers, adjust tactics and improve
results across all locations of the business.
- Oversee cash flow planning with a strong emphasis on optimizing
- Own the capital expenditure plans, ensuring that the capital is
invested wisely and that the business cases are properly made.
Complete post audit reviews in accordance with corporate
- Review and coordinate accounting of construction and paving
departments, ensuring proper job cost reporting, revenue
recognition and WIP analysis.
- Oversee short-term and strategic planning and budgeting which
is in alignment with the overall objectives of Cornejo, Hamm and
- Strategically partner with the Kansas Operations President,
Company Presidents, and senior management teams to enhance
financial performance and business opportunities.
- Provide strategic, financial and analytical support to the
Kanas Operations President on M&A opportunities.
- Establish consistent financial reporting and forecasting among
- Spearhead the finance integrations of acquisitions within
Cornejo and Hamm in coordination with SFG.
First 12 Months Focus & Deliverables
-- Provide meaningful analysis and reporting to the Kansas
executive teams and their reports, as well as to Summit
- Partner with the Kansas executive teams to develop and
challenge the strategic direction of the business, including the
- Identify opportunities to drive operational excellence, improve
the financial acumen of operations, and eliminate waste in
processing and reporting.
- Ensure complete financial analysis and integration of
acquisitions, meeting all reporting deadlines.
Candidate Specification: Key Selection Criteria Ideal
The ideal candidate will be an accomplished financial executive
with superior leadership skills, unquestionable integrity, a
positive reputation and demonstrated success serving as a finance
leader within an organization of similar size and complexity.
The successful candidate will ideally possess:
-- Prior industry experience in the Manufacturing/Industrial
-- 8+ years of finance leadership experience with increasing levels
of responsibility, preferably held a financial leadership role in
an autonomous business for at least five years.
- Experience in job cost or manufacturing ERP and direct exposure
to Viewpoint or Hyperion software.
- Experience with M&A due diligence procedures and
- Candidate credentials will include an undergraduate degree or
international equivalent of a four-year college degree in
accounting, finance, or other related discipline. A CPA is
desirable. An MBA or other advanced degree will be given preferred
- Proven ability to manage in a geographically diverse business,
with ability to travel (30% or less.)

should be well-grounded in all aspects of the financial function,
including accounting/controllership, cash management, FP&A,
GAAP reporting, and information systems. S/he will have superior
finance acumen, serving as a business partner to the Kansas
Operations President and broader organization by providing
value-adding analytical insight and perspective based on
presentation and analysis of financial and operating data. This
will include operational finance skills and a commercial mindset,
including the ability to develop analyses, performance measures and
other measures that drive profitability/value within the business.
